Mitihoon – Bangkok, October 24, 2025 – CP AXTRA Public Company Limited, the operator of Makro and Lotus’s, reaffirms its commitment to sustainability by expanding its flagship initiative, “AXTRA Zero Waste from Waste to Wealth.” The program aims to systematically manage food surplus throughout the supply chain from upstream to downstream to achieve zero landfill waste by 2030. By turning waste into value, the project promotes a circular economy and reduces environmental impact, while creating economic opportunities for communities. To date, the initiative has supported over 300 farmers, generating more than THB 76 million in economic value for local communities and Thai farmers.
- Upstream – CP AXTRA’s procurement teams work closely with producers to plan appropriate output volumes, reducing waste at the source. The company also collaborates on innovative packaging designs that extend product shelf life and maintain quality.
- Midstream – At the store level, Makro and Lotus’s deploy an automated demand forecasting and inventory system to ensure optimal stock levels, prevent overordering, and preserve freshness through temperature control. Products approaching expiry are sold at discounted prices under the “yellow label” scheme to maximize value and minimize waste.
- Downstream – Edible surplus food is donated through the company’s “กินได้ไม่ทิ้งกัน” program, providing nutritious meals to vulnerable groups and communities in need. Food that is no longer fit for consumption is supplied to farmers for the cultivation of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) protein insects, which serve as animal feed. The resulting BSF frass (waste) is repurposed as organic fertilizer, while other organic materials are processed into compost and bio-fermented liquid fertilizer for agriculture. This integrated approach reduces carbon emissions and creates new income streams for farmers.
- Notable examples include Noy Chicken Farm in Nakhon Pathom, which has cut feeding costs by over 50% after replacing mealworms and vitamin supplements with BSF protein, and Siwapon Farm, which uses BSF to convert farm waste into feed and high-quality organic fertilizer for kale cultivation.
Mrs. Siriporn Dechsingha, Chief Corporate Sustainability and Communication Officer, CP AXTRA Public Company Limited, stated “The ‘AXTRA Zero Waste’ initiative is more than just a concept it’s a concrete action implemented across every Makro and Lotus’s branch nationwide. We are committed to developing Zero Waste Stores and expanding the model to surrounding communities through collaboration with partners across sectors, driving Thailand toward a zero-waste society that grows sustainably together.”
Dr. Thanit Changthavorn, Director of the Biodiversity-Based Economy Development Office (BEDO), added: “The Black Soldier Fly is a true environmental hero. It can decompose up to 90% of food waste and is rich in protein. BEDO has partnered with CP AXTRA to transfer BSF cultivation knowledge to farmers a perfect integration where food waste meets agricultural need, creating shared value for both the environment and local communities.”
Mr. Jaturong Laoleam, Environmentalist in Department of Climate Change and Environment (DCCE), noted: “Using BSF for organic waste treatment is a biotechnology solution that effectively reduces greenhouse gas emissions from landfills. The larvae’s high protein content makes them a cost-efficient animal feed, cutting feed expenses by 40–75%, depending on species and usage. Moreover, BSF frass contains essential nutrients that can be used as organic fertilizer or soil enrichment material.”
CP AXTRA continues to support farmers in BSF protein cultivation through collaboration with BEDO, Khon Kaen University, and various government agencies. By sharing knowledge and providing resources nationwide, the initiative helps reduce waste to landfill and promotes circular economy principles across the food supply chain.
The project has received positive feedback from participating farmers for lowering feed costs and enhancing the quality of their products. It marks a significant step toward comprehensive food waste management and a sustainable future for farmers, communities, and society as a whole.
