Mitihoon — Thai Union Group marked the 10th anniversary of SeaChange® today with a dedicated event, SeaChange® Day, focused on hands-on ocean and coastal conservation activities. Thai Union’s decade of progress under SeaChange® has led to tangible impact, from responsible sourcing and labor standards to climate action, community investment, and ocean plastics reduction.
More than 3.1 billion people worldwide depend on seafood as a vital source of protein, making it central to global nutrition, livelihoods, and food security. Yet as the industry faces warming seas, pressure from overfishing, and rising expectations for transparency and worker welfare, the responsibilities behind how this food is produced have become more complex.
For Thai Union Group PCL, those responsibilities have been guided for the past decade by SeaChange®, its industry-leading sustainability strategy. Originally launched in 2016 and now advanced through SeaChange® 2030, it has grown from a set of sustainability commitments into a companywide framework shaping how Thai Union manages responsible sourcing, labor standards, environmental stewardship, and transparency. The strategy has become both a source of resilience and an operating framework, connecting Thai Union’s business with its purpose, Healthy Living, Healthy Oceans.
Adam Brennan, Chief Sustainability and Communications Officer at Thai Union Group, said: “SeaChange® has always been about protecting the people and ecosystems that make seafood possible. That means working toward supply chains where fishers, workers, and farmers can work safely and with dignity, and where oceans and coastal ecosystems remain healthy enough to sustain food security for the long term. When we started, expectations around traceability and labor standards were inconsistent across the industry. Over the past decade, we have worked to change that by raising standards for responsible sourcing, improving supply chain visibility, and strengthening protections for people at every stage of production.”
Ludovic Garnier, Chief Financial Officer of Thai Union Group, said: “As a global company working across diverse markets and complex supply chains, accountability and transparency are essential to how Thai Union earns trust. Over the past decade, SeaChange® has strengthened our business by embedding responsible practices into how we source, produce, and invest, building confidence with customers, investors, and partners while positioning Thai Union for resilience.”
A decade of progress under SeaChange®
When SeaChange® launched in 2016, Thai Union set out to help shape stronger standards for responsible seafood, with early commitments focused on responsible tuna sourcing, Zero Recruitment Fee policies, ethical recruitment, traceability, and labor standards across land and sea.
Under SeaChange® 2030, that foundation has expanded into a broader companywide strategy, connecting people, planet, and performance through work on responsible aquaculture, climate action, ecosystem restoration, ocean plastics, social impact, and sustainability-linked financing.
External recognition has reinforced that progress. In 2026, Thai Union was included in the S&P Global Sustainability Yearbook, ranking in the top 1% worldwide in the Food Products industry with a score of 89 out of 100. The recognition builds on Thai Union’s wider sustainability performance, including previous No. 1 rankings on the Food Products Industry Index of the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices in 2018, 2019, 2022, and 2024, a 4.3 out of 5 FTSE Russell ESG Score, a SET ESG Rating of AA, and an A- rating in CDP’s 2025 climate disclosure.
Highlighted Progress Under SeaChange® 2030
Across wild-caught fish and aquaculture, climate action, traceability, and labor standards globally, Thai Union has continued to set a leading standard across the global seafood industry, including the following progress milestones:
Funded 9 Fishery Improvement Projects, the most in the global seafood industry, with almost all supported fisheries achieving MSC certification and the remaining fisheries in assessment for certification.
- Sourced 68% of farmed shrimp from responsible sources, including certified farms and farms participating in credible improvement programs.
- Achieved 95% at-sea monitoring coverage across Thai Union’s tuna supply chain, strengthening transparency and helping combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing.
- Reduced operational greenhouse gas emissions by 29% (scope 1 and 2) versus the 2021 baseline through renewable energy, fuel switching, efficiency improvements, and low-carbon technologies.
- Implemented digital “can trackers” across Chicken of the Sea, Genova, John West, Petit Navire, and Mareblu, enabling consumers to trace product origins through codes printed on cans.
- Committed to zero recruitment fees for migrant workers in Thailand in 2016, expanding the program globally in 2022.
- Launched a flagship lower-carbon shrimp program in 2024, reducing farm-level emissions by up to 30% compared with conventional shrimp farming.
- Thai Union Feedmill became the first feed mill in Asia to achieve ASC Feed Standard certification in 2024, demonstrating leadership in responsible feed supply chains.
- 99% of tuna supply chain volume covered by Thai Union’s Fisher Work & Welfare program, advancing vessel social responsibility through Vessel Improvement Plans, Vessel Code of Conduct audits, or equivalent programs.
SeaChange® Day: Marking 10 Years of Action Ahead of World Ocean Day
To mark the 10th anniversary, Thai Union hosted SeaChange® Day on June 2 at Sirindhorn International Environmental Park in Cha-Am, Phetchaburi, under the theme “SEA the CHANGE. Be the CHANGE.” The event was designed to connect SeaChange® 2030 commitments with practical community action, bringing together Thai Union leadership and employees, media, partners, students, teachers, and participants for a hands-on program focused on ocean and coastal sustainability.
Held in a restored mangrove ecosystem, the program translated key SeaChange® priorities into four areas of action. Through Shape the Shore, participants learned about mangrove ecosystems, planted mangrove trees, and supported seedling nurseries alongside local students and teachers. Through Sea Scan, they took part in beach cleanup, waste sorting, marine debris education, and drone monitoring for fishing ghost gear along the coast. ReLoop ReUse focused on circularity by transforming abandoned, lost, or discarded fishing gear into functional items, while Tuna Lab explored how seafood resources can be used more fully, from food and nutrition to calcium and pet food applications.
The day also highlighted some of the partnerships helping turn SeaChange® 2030 commitments into practical action:
- Environmental Education Centre of Thailand (EEC): Leading hands-on environmental education, from mangrove and marine ecosystem learning to activities designed to build conservation awareness among young people.
- ARRI (Aerial Recon & Recovery Initiative): Demonstrating coastal drone scanning and AI technology for precise identification of fishing ghost gear, one of the most dangerous forms of marine debris, while also supporting circularity through activities that transform marine waste into functional items.
- Second Life: Guiding waste sorting and source separation to show how ocean-bound waste can be recovered, classified, and redirected before it reaches the sea.
- Seven Clean Seas: Supporting Thai Union’s broader ocean plastics work through HIPPO, a solar-powered river cleanup system that captures plastic waste from the Chao Phraya River before it flows into the ocean.
As Thai Union marked a decade of SeaChange®, the day showed how the next phase of the strategy is being put into action through education, restoration, circularity, and collaboration. With SeaChange® 2030 guiding its work, Thai Union remains focused on raising standards across the global seafood sector while helping protect the marine resources, ecosystems, and communities that seafood depends on.
