Mitihoon – MCOT Public Company Limited (MCOT) announces its readiness to adopt Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV (HbbTV) technology to enhance the standards of Thailand’s digital television industry. After receiving approval from the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), MCOT will begin HbbTV system trials immediately. The adoption of HbbTV is expected to create new opportunities for the digital TV business , particularly when current digital TV licenses are scheduled to expire in 2029.
On January 22, 2026, at 13.30 hrs. , at Meeting Room 601, Administration Building 1, MCOT organises a meeting with four national digital terrestrial television network operators (MUX operators) including MCOT , Public Relations Department, Thai Public Broadcasting Service (Thai PBS), and Royal Thai Army, together with representatives from the NBTC. The objective of the meeting is to integrate cooperation in developing and upgrading digital TV standards in response with rapid technological changes and changing viewer behavior.
During the meeting, MCOT presents a prototype of HbbTV technology as a model for integrated development between broadcast and broadband systems. The technology demonstrates the potential to deliver new value-added services, including interactive services, supplementary data and content such as video on demand (VOD), e-commerce services, and new service and business opportunities.
Mr. Sommai Suwannawong , MCOT’s Acting President discloses “MCOT invited national digital terrestrial television network operators and the NBTC to jointly discuss and integrate cooperation in developing and upgrading digital TV standards to better respond to technological changes and current digital TV viewing behavior. Our Network Engineering Office has continuously conducted studies, development, and testing of HbbTV technology, progressing through Proof of Concept (PoC), Minimum Viable Product (MVP), and prototype stages.
MCOT offered ourself to be the first digital terrestrial television network operator to conduct HbbTV trials by establishing a regulatory sandbox, following approval from the NBTC. We are ready to share knowledge and collaborate with other MUX operators in the future to maximize benefits for the digital TV industry . We also expect this technology to help support the industry after the expiration of digital TV licenses in 2029.
